Origins

Ice Hockey was first invented as a game for the icy seasons in 1874 Montreal. The people of Montreal were quickly becoming bored with nothing to do at home. TAs the winter became more boring over time, the children had begun skating on the frozen ponds and lakes. The children had wanted to play a game, yet there was no ground which was good for sports. In that winter, a man named J. G. Creighton had found that the round stones were a perfect match for the slick ice. He had soon begun attempting to make a sport. After this discovery, he started making a game for the children to play during the winter. He tried kicking the stones at first, yet that hurt his feet. That was the moment that he thought of sticks to bash the stones around. He had begun cutting thick oak and spruce logs to create a stick for smacking the stones, which he had now called pucks. Once he was done making the Hockey Sticks, he began thinking of the rules of Hockey as just batting around a round rock was no fun. He started making goals for two teams to score in and certain boundaries for players to stay inside. Hw declared that no person was to touch the rock with their hands other than the newly made goaltender, which saved shots from going in the goal. He continued to make rules, which evolved along time into what we know as Hockey today.

Today's Hockey

Hockey has changed a bunch over the years and we have new rules, gear, and even new standards and professional leagues! Hockey is played throughout the world. Even though Hockey was invented in Montreal, which is in Canada, Hockey is most often played in America and Russia with Canada coming in third place!  Every league is unique and they have rules that change from league to league.

Hockey Rules of Today:

  • Only the goalies can touch the puck with their hands.

  • There is something called a faceoff, which is like a jump ball in basketball. only two people can be in the faceoff circle for a faceoff.

  • Shooting the puck out of bounds on purpose will be called a delay of game and you will be punished

  • If the goal is pushed out of where it is supposed to be, the person with the puck will get a penalty shot, which is a shot with just him and the goalie at the goal

  • There can't be more than 10 players on the ice, 5 for each team.

Even though most people here in Texas won't ever get to play hockey, it never hurts to learn or even try out new sports! There is a form of Hockey called land hockey, but some of the rules are different. Even if they are slightly different, you can still enjoy and learn about the sport in other ways. If you want a real experience with Hockey, you can go to a Professional Hockey game in Dallas where there is a team that plays for the NHL (National Hockey League). The NHL is the Hockey league that covers America and some regions of Canada. Hockey got its start as simply smacking a rock around with a stick, yet it has come so far and become so advanced with a massive fanbase. It is one of the 5 Primary sports of America, coming in 4th with viewership. (Football = 1st, Basketball = 2nd, Baseball =3rd, Hockey = 4th, and Soccer = 5th.). I get that most of the people reading this don't like Hockey, yet finding new sports to try can never be bad.
